Black Friday's luster fading

Some retailers have been trying to lure shoppers into stores early this year to start holiday shopping, but for many shoppers, the kickoff date has been, is and always will be the day after Thanksgiving, or "Black Friday."

Millions of Americans will find themselves waking up before the sun is out Friday, rushing to local malls in sweat pants just to snatch up freebies and discounted items such as paper shredders and laptops.

"Most people are excited by the competitive aspects," said Kit Yarrow, a consumer behavior expert and professor at Golden Gate University. "It's like a sport."

Black Friday, so named because that is supposedly when stores begin hitting profits for the year, is as traditional as eating turkey the day before, but its role in the holiday shopping season has diminished.
